Weaving Design and Pleated Structure
Artistry in Bamboo
Fashion designer and sculptural textile artist Kelsey Ann Kasom explores the intimate relationship between empowering the body and shaping its surrounding environments. She believes that this can only be achieved through an understanding of the material’s innate potential. Kelsey’s material language is an undeniable connection shaped by form that enables expressionism evident in fashion and interior design.
“Pleat&Weave™ The Interplay of Line and Grain was designed from an exploration of three fundamental principles within my practice: pleat, weave, and warp. These concepts define the scope of possibility through the techniques created from the natural grain of the materials I work with alongside the remarkable grain of bamboo. Pleat explores a repeated movement—a rhythm of perspective created through structure. At its core, the structure is the material itself: fibers spun into thread and then woven into fabric, a symbiotic origin. Much like pleating, this repeated woven structure varies with its own identity, changing the texture and depth of the material’s natural properties. The structure of the weave has boundaries understood through its grain, defined between warp and weft. I see things differently within this blank space. I see a landscape of possibility, where movement is not merely a result of draping, but a continuation of the material’s natural rhythm. The material is elevated, embodying a fluidity that transforms static environments into dynamic expressions of design.
In my work with bamboo, the natural grain aligns harmoniously with the weave of my natural fabrics, as both are shaped by an intrinsic rhythm of repeating lines. The interplay of shadow and reflective light on Plyboo RealCore® bamboo enhances the depth and dimension of the design, bringing its organic flow to life. Much like the way light shifts across woven fabrics, the grain of bamboo responds to light with fluidity and structure, reminding us that every material possesses its own inherent movement. Natural fabrics and sustainability of Plyboo® bamboo share a common truth: when form is guided by nature, it reveals a harmony that elevates both material and design to their highest creative potential.
I have deeply enjoyed my collaboration with the Plyboo® team. This body of work has allowed me to further explore the natural synergy between fabric and bamboo. Together, we’ve crafted a collection that not only celebrates the organic beauty of bamboo but redefines its potential, transforming spaces by creating forms that merge artistry with innovation, bringing my vision of fluidity and structure to life in ways that are both bold and enduring.”
